German Bouldering Team trainings, 2009-2014


My job as head coach of the German Alpine club's Bouldering team has many faces. It includes to facilitate thinking or learning new behaviour and improve physical skills for personal growth and advancement in the demands of bouldering contests. Another aspect is to transfer as much of my knowledge and experience to my climbers. I’m involved in all the aspects of the sport, including physical and mental development and the application of tactics and strategies during the contests. Competitive bouldering is relatively young so common sense on training program design and injury prevention is not yet established. Climbing is mostly a self-taught activity up to a certain age so that some athletes are not used to being coached. We than have to establish a practise of feedback and critique. The athlete perceives a contest from a first person perspective, feeling a slippery hold or fading strength first hand - whereas I have an outside overview - observing body language, comparing the competitors’ different solutions and keeping the judging in check. To bring these two perceptions to match and to keep the communication running so that we both benefit from our different perspectives is the biggest challenge for any coach.
Often I just ask questions and offer opportunities that will challenge my athletes to find answers from within him- or herself.

Boulder World Cup 2013 report - Munich, Germany

The sky finally cleared up in Munich and sunset light hit the wall as some of the best boulderers in the world battled for the last medals of the season. In the end, Rei Sugimoto got his first gold medal ever and Anna Stöhr, in a legendary streak, won her 7th world cup of 2013. The overall champions were already known but that didn’t prevent this last World Cup from being an amazing competition. Even Stöhr and Sharafutdinov, who didn’t have that much at stake, fought until the last attempt of the last problem (quite literally). Tonde Katiyo and I will document the route setting of the 2011 Boulder World Cup. Our goal is to raise awareness and ultimately a higher standard of route setting at climbing comps.  For that Tonde has set up a site that allows for all kind of interactivity. Till the site is fully operational you can check out our route setting playlist on YouTube. The Milano BWC was really strenuous for me and I got a little sick after returning home, so I only managed to do some male qualification problems for today. Der Hallensprecher Christoph Driever nannte ihn den "California Sunnyboy", Medien bezeichnen ihn das "Wunderkind", die Zuschauer fassten seine Performance als "unglaublich" zusammen und alle haben recht. Chris Sharma ist im Klettern eine Ausnahmeerscheinung und das bereits mit 20 Jahren. Nachdem er gestern Abend das letzte Problem in seinem unwiderstehlichen Stil im ersten Versuch geklettert hatte, brandete tosender Applaus in der Halle auf. Das deutsche Publikum hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt den jungen Amerikaner schon ins Herz geschlossen und obwohl noch nicht feststand, daß er den Wettkampf gewonnen hatte, war er der "Held des Tages". Anders als die übrigen Teilnehmer ging Chris nämlich mit einer ungewohnten Lockerheit, die nicht mit Coolness zu verwechseln ist, an die Probleme ran. Er schien sich bei allen Problemen köstlich zu amüsieren und lachte auch noch, wenn er kurz vor dem Topgriff abfiel, während andere fast in wilde Raserei verfielen. Der kleine, feine Unterschied eben. Dabei hatten die Routenbauer für das Finale heftigste Probleme geschraubt."
